Getting More Bang for Your Business Buck
February 28, 2008 by writerbynature
I’ve been a Freegan for a little over a year. What that means is that when I have items I no longer need, like office furniture, old electronics, or any other useful item, I post a message to my local Freegan network and – voíla – someone will come and take the item off my hands.
By the same token, when I need an item, I’ll post a message to the network. Most of the time, someone is getting rid of the item I need.
Besides saving money, I’m walking my eco-friendly talk by keeping useful items out of the landfill. I take care of the items while I own them, so I’m passing along items that are useful, not junk. Most Freegans tend to be the same way. If something is broken or valuable only for parts, it’s in the message.
One way I measure my success is when my priorities and my bottom line work together.

This is such a great concept. I had not heard of Freegan before, but I do use The Freecycle Network (http://www.freecycle.org/) on occasion. It functions the same way - you post what you want to pass along or browse the online ads for items you need.
Thanks for sharing Freegan, JJ! I’ll add it to my bookmarks list now.
I’m also a freecycler. Here in Kentucky, it’s grouped by county and it’s a great way to get rid of things you no longer need or want, and receive the warm feeling that you are helping someone else get what they really want or need. Ecologically, economically sound and warm fuzzies all the way around!
Great minds must think alike I too have been a freecycler for a few years now. I just can’t see throwing things away when others need them, and the other way around too, I have received a lot of nice things for the baby that would have cost me a fortune. Its a beautiful thing. I saw the show the other day with freegans on Oprah and I have to say I draw the line at getting food from the trash. It is unsafe and unsanitary and a disaster waiting to happen. To bad there isn’t an organization that could facilitate with food establishments to pick up what is going to be thrown out.I know— the legal issues.
