A Freezer May Be My Next Capital Investment

June 18, 2008 by writerbynature

What’s buying a freezer got to do with running an independent remote professional business? More than you think.

What difference does it make how many billable hours I have if there’s no food on the shelves to buy?

Consider the floods and weather-related events taking place in this country and around the world. In many cases, crops cannot be planted, which means there will be less food to harvest.

I never heard of a tornado in my part of the world before, but the one that hit less than ten miles from here on Monday is now confirmed.

As a self-employed freelancer, we all face decisions on how to allocate both our business and personal resources.

What will my business look like at the end of this year? In five years?

Should my next computer purchase be a laptop or a notebook? Should I purchase an iPhone? Should I keep certain clients or pursue new ones?

While we enjoy the creative and challenging aspects of running a business, we all still need to eat.

So, while I’m working on a CSA farm anyway, maybe I should invest a few more hours preserving enough food to get through the winter.

After all, as an independent business owner, I am my business.
